The classic Tilt-Head design has remained virtually unchanged for decades because it simply works. It provides easy access to the bowl for adding ingredients or changing attachments while maintaining a compact footprint that fits comfortably on almost any countertop.
This vintage KitchenAid features the original design that helped build the brand's reputation. Unlike many newer models, it includes externally accessible carbon motor brushes located beneath the black plastic screw caps, making future service and maintenance simple.
Around 2022, KitchenAid introduced a redesigned motor assembly and began phasing out the original serviceable brush design. While the newer design has its advantages, it has not been in service long enough to fully establish the same decades-long reputation for durability, and some updated components have already proven less robust than those found in the previous generation. Fortunately, every mixer sold by Mr. Mixer—whether vintage or modern—receives our proven upgrades designed to improve reliability and extend service life.
Understanding the Pre-Solid-State Design
This mixer features KitchenAid's original pre-solid-state speed control system, used prior to 1979. While many enthusiasts appreciate the simplicity of these early machines, it's important to understand what makes them different.
Being pre-solid-state does not provide more power or more consistent mixing speeds than later models. In fact, these mixers often produce more mechanical operating noise because of how the original speed regulation system functions.
Rather than using an electronic phase control board, these mixers regulate motor speed through a combination of a resistor, capacitor, centrifugal governor, and speed control plate, which work together to control the armature. The system is straightforward, fully serviceable, and has proven reliable for decades.
When KitchenAid introduced solid-state speed control in 1979, the motor itself remained fundamentally the same. The primary changes were the addition of the electronic phase control board and the relocation of the power cord connection. The basic operating principles and mixing performance continued to rely on the same proven engineering.
Originally, these vintage mixers were equipped with a 2-prong power cord. As part of every Mr. Mixer refurbishment, we upgrade each mixer with a modern 3-prong grounded power cord to improve electrical safety while preserving the original character and functionality of the machine.
The KitchenAid Artisan is the only standard Tilt-Head model originally equipped with a 5-quart bowl. Most other Tilt-Head models were originally sold with a 4.5-quart bowl.

The Professional HD provides the user with the same power as the Professional 600 models but comes with a 5 qt bowl instead of a 6 qt bowl for small or large batches. Bowl-lift machines tend to be stronger than the tilt-head units when it comes to heavy mixing.

The tilt head models of KitchenAid Mixer are the perfect blend between performance and beauty. The Tilt head model design has been unchanged for over 60 years and with good reason, why would you change something that works?
The design of the machines did change around 2022 and they are phasing out the old design that includes the carbon motor brushes externally under the black plastic screw caps. The new design changes have not been on the market long enough to determine their durability and some of the changes have been proven to be weaker than the previous generation, fortunately the machines that we offer (both new style and old) all come upgraded to prevent the premature demise of your mixer!
The tilt-head design allows for ingredients to be added easily to the mixing bowl and will fit nicely on any countertop. The Artisan model is the only tilt-head unit that comes with a 5 qt bowl (all other tilt-head models come with a 4.5 qt bowl).
The tilt head units that we offer come with all of our compatible upgrades, which include the Love Handle, Everdime, Spring & Washer, Bearing Bracket Lock Nuts, and Upgraded Body Screws, and a metal push rod.

The internal ring gear guides/articulates with the planetary gear. Every so often, this gear will lose its pressing/get damaged by abnormal stress to the planetary and needs to be replaced!
This gear is NOT compatible with Artisan Mini models, Accolade, or Professional Models.
The thicker of the gears in the commercial DC motor assembly, the Front moon gear pair to the hub assembly gear and are housed withing the transmission sleeve. These three gears are the front three gears located inside of the transmission sleeve.
Not compatible with KSM55/60/70 models with AC Motors
The thinner of the gears housed within the transmission sleeve of the commercial DC motor, the Rear Moon Gears, affix to the trident pinion assembly, mounting to the motors face and driven by the sun gear.
The hub sleeve bearing holds the hub drive assembly into the front transmission housing and is secured in place by the tightening of the top cover of the housing to the housing itself.
The pinion sun gear, the smallest of the gears located within the commercial DC motor, drives the entire transmission. It is affixed to the motor and rides between the three rear moon gears.
Not compatible with KSM55/60/70 models with AC Motors

The process is extremely convenient. Purchase the Lifetime Service Guarantee. If your mixer breaks, simply give us a call, and we will send you a box with all of the shipping supplies and a label. All you have to do is pay for shipping and the rest is covered by the guarantee!
What Isn’t Covered
This list is quite small. Our goal is not to limit your ability to utilize the lifetime service guarantee. The only things that aren’t covered are forces of nature (floods, tornadoes, fire, etc.) and gross misuse such as falling from the counter (or third floor balcony). All normal use is covered!
